# Factoring a Trinomial, (positive and negative)

Q: Factor $x^2+6x-7$

A: Use this method for any trinomial of the form:

$x^2 + bx + c$

Think of two numbers that multiply to the c term in the trinomial (c=-7 in this question and add up to the b term (b=+6 in this question).

You should know that one must be positive and the other negative (in order to multiply to a negative number).

The numbers are 7 and -1.

$x^2 +6x -7$
$=(x+7)(x-1)$
