TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator Review

TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator Review

This is the tried, tested and true model that every high school student has used at some point in their math and science careers. It is steady, dependable and easy to use, and is rather forgiving in what it allows in terms of closing brackets properly and other matters of syntax. If you have never used a graphing calculator before and need one for grade 10, 11 or 12 math, this may be the best choice for you. The price is certainly right!

But if it’s a TI-83, surely it’s not as good as an 84, 89 or some higher model number, right?

Not necessarily. Like we’ve said many times before, the best calculator is the one that’s right for you. For many high school students, this is easily the best choice out there. Many of the other models of calculators, such as the TI-89 for example, have so many buttons and added functions that it can become overwhelming just to use the calculator for regular everyday use. The TI-83 is the closest you will find to a regular scientific calculator in terms of its ease of use, but it will of course also allow you to graph and analyze a variety of functions.

The TI-Link Cable and Downloadable Programs

If you do end up going on in math and sciences, don’t think that you will immediately outgrow this calculator. With the use of the included TI-Link Cable, you are able to download programs online that will add an incredible amount of features to your TI-83, making it helpful for advanced physics, chemistry and statistics courses. The TI-83 has been around for quite some time, and as a result, the number of programs available is astounding. The network of developers have built many useful applications for the TI-83, and they are free to download and use. They can be found easily with a few Google searches on both the official TI site and in various online communities.

Four AAA batteries

The Ti-83 uses four AAA batteries, unlike some of the newer models that have switched to rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries. While some may see the AAA batteries as outdated, they do last for a much longer time than a single charge of the newer models does. It is also a lot easier to carry around spare batteries in the case of an emergency on a test than it is to ensure that you’re sitting next to an electrical outlet! Lastly, using AAA batteries means you will never run into issues with the battery failing. Some students have reported their Li-ion batteries losing their charge after a few years and becoming undependable. It may seem old fashioned, but four AAA batteries is still the preferred method of choice for many of our students.

The Final Two Cents – Is the TI-83 Plus for you?

If you’re looking for a graphing calculator that will be easy to learn and will help you through high school math, then you can’t go wrong with it. It’s certainly not flashy and sleek like some of the newer models, but hey, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? And if you are looking to up the style of your TI-83, you can purchase a colorful silicon case which certainly adds some stylistic punch to your math class, and makes it easier to hold as well.
